Article I
Name
This organization shall be
named the Valley Writers Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club. We may also
conduct business as the Valley Writers Club.
Article II
Purpose
The purpose of this
organization, which is non-profit, shall be to provide a means of exchanging
ideas and promoting the art and craft of writing.
Article III
Membership
Sec. 1 Anyone interested in
the art and craft of writing, in improving his or her skills, and in
discovering opportunities for publication may apply to become a member of
this organization. This organization will seek to attract members from the
Roanoke Valley area as well as surrounding counties.
Sec. 2 Members of the
Virginia Writers Club who live in the area served by the Valley Writers
Chapter shall automatically become members upon application to join the
Valley Writers Chapter. Any other prospective member must fill out an
application and attend three meetings within a three-month period in order
to receive an invitation to officially join Valley Writers.
Sec. 3 Anyone under the age
of 18 may apply to become an "associate member," a status which does not
include the privileges of voting or serving as an officer.
Sec. 4 Members who have not attended a regular
meeting of Valley Writers in six months will be dropped from the membership
roll and will need to reapply.
Article IV
Officers
The elected officers of this
organization shall be a President, Vice President, Secretary, and
Treasurer. Officers shall serve for a term of one year, upon nomination and
election at the first meeting of this organization in the month of January.
The officers will conduct the normal business of the organization and
organize and conduct the meetings of its membership. The President may
appoint committees as deemed necessary.
Article V
Meetings
This organization shall
normally meet on the first and third Thursdays of each month, unless decided
otherwise by a majority vote of members. The organization will seek twice a
year to have a special meeting with a guest speaker or other special
program. The first meeting in January shall constitute an annual membership
meeting and will include election of officers.
Article VI
Finances
This organization will rely
on donations to support its activities. These activities may include, but
are not limited to, distribution of information to members or prospective
members, special programs or workshops, and guest speakers.
Article VII
Parliamentary Authority
Robert’s Rules of Order
Newly Revised shall be the parliamentary authority of this organization when
applicable and when not inconsistent with these Bylaws or any special rules
adopted by this organization.
Article VIII
Relationship to The Virginia Writers Club
This organization is a
chapter of the Virginia Writers Club. This organization will encourage its
members to become members of the state-wide Virginia Writers Club. It will,
as requested, provide representatives to the Board of Governors of the
Virginia Writers Club.
Article IX
Amendments
These Bylaws may be amended
by a two-thirds vote of the members present at any regular or called
meeting, provided that notice of the meeting shall include the nature of any
proposed amendment, and that such notice shall be given to members at the
two preceding meetings.
