Who We Are
Valley Writers is a non-profit organization which supports the art and
craft of writing. We meet at 6:30 p.m. on first and third Thursdays of each
month. (Click on Events for our current meeting
place.)
Membership is open to writers of all skills, genres, or experience.
Anyone interested in attending a Valley Writers meeting is invited to
contact our president, Betsy Ashton, email
betsy_ashton2005@yahoo.com.
While Valley Writers collects no dues, contributions to help fund club activities are always
welcome. Members are encouraged—but not required—to join the Virginia Writers Club ($30 per year).
Valley Writers provides a supportive atmosphere for writers who want input on their work.
At Valley Writers' meetings, members network with other writers; participate in the critique process;
improve writing skills; gain inspiration from the efforts and successes of fellow writers;
and share information about upcoming writing workshops, conferences, seminars, publishing
opportunities and contests.
Valley Writers encourages its members to publish. Many Valley Writers contribute to regional
publications such as Senior News, Prime Living,
Blue Ridge Traditions, the
Roanoker,
Blue Ridge
Country, the Smith Mountain Eagle, and the
Roanoke Times. A few have written articles for
national magazines. Many have stories, articles, poems, or essays in various regional or national
anthologies. Several members have already published books; others have works in progress.
Valley Writers occasionally sponsors special events—such as guest speakers, writing programs,
or public readings.
